Workshop | Podgorica, Montenegro

In April 2024, TAIEX and the TRATOLOW project hosted a workshop on climate change adaptation in collaboration with UNDP Montenegro at the UNDP premises in Podgorica. This gathering of experts in the field strongly supported in-depth exchange and discussions on the development as well as implementation and revision of National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and the relevant, but also critical role that Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) processes and its related indicators or criteria play.

A diverse array of stakeholders converged in Podgorica, including relevant Ministries, public institutions, practitioners, and civil society organizations. Their collective expertise formed the cornerstone of enriching dialogues and collaborative initiatives throughout the event.

Against the backdrop of Montenegro's vulnerability to climate-related hazards such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and forest fires, the workshop underscored the urgent need for proactive adaptation measures. Participants delved into the details of the NAP development and the indispensable role of continuous monitoring in mitigating and reducing risks as well as enhancing resilience. The first day of the workshop provided a comprehensive overview of European perspectives on adaptation, along with insights into Montenegro's NAP activities and experiences from the EU Member States Sweden and France. Animated discussions punctuated the sessions, facilitating a rich exchange of ideas and best practices. On the second day, attention shifted towards M&E approaches adopted by the EU Member State Finland, offering valuable insights into diverse methodologies and frameworks. Participants engaged in group discussions, aiming to extract transferable lessons and tailoring them to Montenegro's unique context.

As the workshop ended, it made a lasting impression on everyone, sparking increased awareness and dedication to moving forward with adaptation efforts, its Monitoring and Evaluation. Participants departed with enriched perspectives and a shared sense of purpose, ready to lead efforts aimed at enhancing Montenegro's resilience against the challenges posed by climate change.
