Albania

Albania was identified as a potential candidate for EU membership during the Thessaloniki European Council Summit in June 2003. Albania is an EU candidate since 2014 and opened the negotiations in March 2020.

A schedule for the alignment in climate change field is prepared and approved by the Decision of the Council of Ministers (DCM) “On approval of the national Plan for European integration 2016–2020”. The level of alignment with the EU Acquis has to be further elaborated in regards to the water sector and on climate change.

Important steps have been taken towards policy documents and action plans on climate change, involving especially energy and transport sectors, but also agriculture, forestry, waste management etc. Regarding mitigation of climate change, Albania has shown continuous commitment to reduce the greenhouse gases emissions from economic sectors, but also increase the GHG sinks through the ambitious forest planting policies.

The main beneficiary institutions of the TRATOLOW project in Albania are the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy.
